Egencia vs TripActions – 2022 Comparison

Finding the right travel management solution for your business needs can seem like a tough task. You want a solution that offers expense tracking capabilities, credit card integration, automation functionalities, and more.

Here, we’ll be comparing some of the top TMCs: Egencia and TravelActions. We’ll see what works, what doesn’t, and what real-life users say about them.

As a bonus we’ll also introduce you to an alternative to both of these, that could provide exactly what you’re looking for in a modern TMC. Stay tuned for more.

Egencia

Egencia is a corporate travel management company recently acquired by American Express Global Business Travel (AMEX). It’s a solution for big and medium companies who need to send their employees around the world.

It positions itself as a solution to help businesses manage risk, boost traveler well-being, and maximize ROI in business travel. Additionally, it supports six languages and is used in 60 countries.

According to Egencia, their top features include:

  • Eco-friendly travel program: to reduce carbon emissions for greener corporate travel.
  • Duty of care and risk management: to ensure the welfare of your employees from the moment they book until the moment they return home.
  • VAT recovery and reimbursement: so you can save on your travel budget.
  • COVID-19 response: protect your employees wherever they go and comply with COVID-19 safety measurements.

What Egencia users say:

User reviews of Egencia praise how easy and intuitive it is. Users of the platform like how they can book everything from the same place, and easily compare flights and hotels.

It is a really easy platform to use for booking flights, hotels, and rental cars, amongst other things.” – Courtney K., review from G2

“It consolidates all of the flights available into one view that I can filter down into specific requirements I have (time/day/cost/etc).”Review from Capterra

However, not everything is good news for Egencia’s users. Many complain about the mobile app features and loading speed and overall there are some improvements they would like to see.

In today’s day and age, you need an app that is easy to use, fast & has all of the functions the desktop site has. This does not.”Scott K., review from Capterra

“I wish they included a few more budget flight options. Sometimes I’m able to find way cheaper flights on Expedia from recognized carriers that aren’t in Egencia.” Anthony M., review from G2

My coworker and I had to call Egencia to get receipts for our hotel stay and had to wait on hold for 20 minutes other than that they are great!”Daniel L., review from G2

When looking at the overall performance of Egencia, it does the job. However, there are some mobile app and customer service improvements that are urgently needed by their users. They also don’t offer a free trial—not ideal for small companies.

TripActions

TripActions is a full travel and expense management platform. It helps businesses of all sizes with policy compliance, online booking, mobile travel solutions, expense reports, traveler notifications, and more.

Its AI technology provides useful recommendations based on your company’s policies, real-time insights on your employee travel spending, and a comprehensive business travel management experience.

TripActions says their top features include:

  • Sustainable travel management: enabling you to reduce your company’s carbon footprint.
  • Large inventory: so you can find the hotels and airlines that meet your needs.
  • AI-powered technology: increases savings by finding the cheapest deals and recommending the services you really need.
  • Corporate card management: to ensure you’re always in control by weaving policy into corporate card spend and automating reporting.

What TripActions users say:

TripActions users think the software is fairly easy to use once you get used to its features, which users report can take a bit of time. However, once getting to grips with the software, users report how useful the insights that the platform provides are.

“The different products are hard to understand initially but once you figure that out it is relatively easy to use.” Clyde A., review from Capterra

Although some users give it some good feedback, many have some valid complaints about the platform. For example, some travelers complain about the integrations with the airlines and other apps which seem to harm its overall booking tool functionality.

Some users also complain about the organization of the search results which can make it confusing.

“I had to purchase two one-way tickets because the round trip options did not allow me to book the flights at the times that I wanted.”Kyle K., review from G2

Add-ons aren’t able to be booked through TripActions, which means if the only seats available are economy, you can’t add the ability to choose seats or pay for checked bags in the app. You have to pay for those separately and be reimbursed.Grace H., review from G2

“I did find myself using my airplane’s app for real-time flight notifications instead of TripActions.” Brenton D., review from G2

Another problem that some users report is the approval workflow and process being clunky and not optimized for streamlined booking.

“The only hurdle can be that the trips have to be approved by an approver prior to going to the booking page.”Review from Capterra

TripActions is a versatile travel and expense management company. Although it has some advantages, the problems in its functionality, mobile app, and its hard-to-understand onboarding process can be a dealbreaker for some.
