I explored Ahmednagar through its old streets and local eateries

I had anticipated that Ahmednagar’s forts and monuments would help me comprehend the city. Rather, the city grew more fascinating the more I looked past the main sites. Ahmednagar’s historic streets, restaurants, and culinary culture provided an alternative perspective on the city.

I started to view a meal as an integral part of the experience rather than as something to do after touring. The old parts of the city seemed to bring together two things I enjoy while exploring a destination: the story of its past and the food people still enjoy today.

The old streets showed me another side of Ahmednagar 

While Ahmednagar’s history is associated with the fort, the city has developed far beyond its historic monuments. Walking around its older neighbourhoods highlights the destination’s everyday aspects, from neighbourhood stores and busy streets to tiny food vendors and well-established restaurants.

This method of exploration appealed to me because it eliminated the need to switch between the main attractions. I was reminded that Ahmednagar’s past and present coexist when I saw a historic structure or an old market next to more contemporary stores.

Contrary to what a typical sightseeing plan may imply, this difference gave the city a more authentic sense.

Ahmednagar’s food became part of my way of exploring

There are several well-known Maharashtrian dishes in Ahmednagar, but the local cuisine also has a distinct personality. While local restaurants serve everything from traditional meals to local snacks, local recommendations highlight foods like misal, vada pav, thalipeeth, puran poli, and other options.

When I started researching the city’s culinary traditions, Misal in particular kept coming up. Local conversations suggested Sopanrao Wadewala at Manik Chowk for vada pav, and Rasrang Misal in Daal Mandai.

These suggestions helped me recognise that exploring a city through cuisine does not always mean fine dining establishments. Simple local favourites might sometimes reveal much about daily life.

Ahmednagar’s food that made the city feel more personal

One of my favourite things about walking around a city is that the unforeseen circumstances can end up being just as memorable as the locations I had planned to explore.

That is reflected in Ahmednagar’s culinary scene. Traditional eateries, breakfast establishments, and street food vendors are dispersed across the city. While older districts like MG Road and other central streets have long been linked with local eateries and snacks, Savedi Road, for example, is known for its variety of restaurants.

If I were staying longer, I would seek lodging that would facilitate my exploration of the city’s common areas as well as its historic sites. When deciding where to stay, remember to check the location or connectivity of hotels in Ahmednagar as an additional reference point. Most properties are located close to the fort and the city’s popular attractions, offering suitable amenities for a comfortable stay. Several establishments also offer easy connectivity to the highway, making them suitable for transit travellers seeking easy connectivity to Shirdi or Aurangabad. 

Final thoughts

At first, I believed that seeing Ahmednagar’s well-known historical sites would help me understand the city. I gained a new view by exploring its streets and investigating the local cuisine scene.

The city started to feel less like a collection of monuments and more like a place to live, with old districts, bustling marketplaces, regional specialities, and historical sites all coexisting.

That’s what I found intriguing about this method of exploring Ahmednagar. Seeing everything on the plan isn’t always the best way to get to know a city. It involves slowing down enough to see what people eat, where they congregate, and what the streets disclose in between the well-known attractions.
