Plymouth Argyle away travel boost for 2022/23 League One campaign

Plymouth Argyle have had their travelling to away games in League One during 2022/23 cut by more than 1,000 miles compared to last term.

Their three shortest round trips will all be against sides who have been promoted from League Two, with just 92 miles needed to be covered, there and back, for the Devon Derby against Exeter City.

The Pilgrims’ second shortest journey will be the 248-mile round trip to play Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium.

Rovers clinched the third and final automatic promotion place last season in stunning style after thrashing Northampton Town 7-0 in their last match.

Argyle’s third shortest trip in 2022/23 will be to League Two champions Forest Green for what will only be their second-ever competitive match at The New Lawn Stadium.

Overall, Steven Schumacher’s Pilgrims will travel 11,158 miles to and from away games next season, which is an average of 485 per match. That compares to more than 12,200 miles during their 2021/22 campaign.

Argyle’s shortest journey last term was the 314-mile round trip to Cheltenham Town, but that will be their fourth closest to home during 2022/23.

The furthest that Argyle will have to travel next season is the 659 miles there and back from Morecambe, who are managed by former promotion-winning Pilgrims’ boss Derek Adams.

Argyle’s longest round trip last term was 805 miles for the game against Sunderland, who have been promoted after beating Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 in the League One Play-Off Final at Wembley last month.

The Pilgrims’ second longest journey in 2022/23 will be 650 miles for a clash against Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium, followed by the 621 miles there and back to Accrington Stanley.

The EFL fixtures for the new season will be announced on Thursday, June 23 with the opening round of games taking place on Saturday, July 30.
